Battle of the Bricks occurs.

It begins with a demonstration on West Cedar Street. According to the Boston Post, “Beacon Hill matrons, maintaining their poise and dignity” protest the city’s attempt to replace the neighborhood’s brick sidewalks with concrete. Their campaign proves successful, as Mayor Curley subsequently orders the bricks reinstalled. Their protest is also credited with sparking the preservation movement on Beacon Hill.
